How to use

Type what you are working on, then press Start. A focus session lasts 25 minutes by default and is followed by a 5-minute short break. After every fourth focus session the break is 15 minutes long.

Pause, skip to the next phase or reset the current one at any time, or pick a phase directly at the top. While the timer runs, the remaining time also appears in the browser tab title.

Open Settings to change the minutes, how often the long break comes, whether breaks and focus sessions start on their own, the chime volume and desktop notifications.

The timer compares the end time of each phase with the clock instead of counting ticks, so it stays accurate in a background tab and after a reload. Completed focus sessions are counted for today and start again from zero the next day.

FAQ

Why does the pomodoro technique use 25 minutes?

Francesco Cirillo developed the technique in the late 1980s and timed his study sessions with a tomato-shaped kitchen timer, which gave it its name: pomodoro is Italian for tomato. The standard interval is 25 minutes, a length short enough to start without much resistance and long enough to get something done. It is a convention rather than a rule, so change it if another length suits your work.

Does the timer keep running when the tab is in the background?

Yes. The timer saves the moment the current phase ends and compares it with the clock, so the way browsers slow down background tabs does not make it drift. The chime and the notification are scheduled for the end time, although a hidden tab may deliver them a moment late.

How do desktop notifications work?

Turn on Desktop notification in Settings and allow notifications when the browser asks. The page creates the notification itself in your browser, without any server. Some mobile browsers do not allow notifications from a web page.

What happens if I reload or close the tab?

The timer state is saved in this browser. If you come back while a phase is still running, it continues toward the same end time. If the phase ended while the page was closed, it is counted and the next phase waits for you to press Start.

Where are my settings and session counts stored?

Only in your browser's local storage on this device. Nothing is sent to a server, and clearing this site's data in your browser removes them.
